Workshop on Accessibility Principles, Standards and Design, Jakarta, Indonesia, 29 July 2016

In collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat and the Royal Thai Government, the APCD conducted the Workshop on Accessibility Principles, Standards and Design for officials of the ASEAN Secretariat and their partners in Jakarta, Indonesia on 29 July 2016. The aim of the Workshop was to enhance the understanding and practical knowledge on accessibility of ASEAN Secretariat officials and their partners. This knowledge, in turn, is expected to be applied to the renovation and construction of accessible facilities of the ASEAN Secretariat building.

Present to deliver the opening and welcome remarks were H.E. Dr. Tej Bunnag (Chairman of the Executive Board, APCD) and H.E. Le Luong Minh (Secretary General, ASEAN), respectively, as well as H.E. Busadee Santipitaks (Ambassador of Permanent Mission of Thailand to ASEAN) and H.E. Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee (Deputy Secretary General, ASEAN) for the closing remarks. Also present in the Workshop were resource persons with disabilities mainly in the ASEAN region, including Mr. Krisana Lalai (President, Friendly Design for All Foundation).

TCTP 2016: Knowledge Creation Forum on Community-based Inclusive Development (Capacity Building for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities and their Parents), Bangkok, Thailand, 24 July-6 August 2016

The Third Country Training Programme: Knowledge Creation Forum on Community-based Inclusive Development (Capacity Building for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities and their Parents) was held from 24 July to 6 August 2016 at the APCD Training Building in Bangkok, Thailand. The Training was organized by the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand through the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), with support from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand (MSDHS).

More than 20 participants with intellectual disabilities and their parents in the Mekong sub-region took part in the training. The Training was aimed at developing the participants' artistic skills through creative exercises.

As part of its celebration of the 38th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week, the Philippine Embassy-Bangkok invited APCD representatives as resource persons for its 'Seminar on Disability Awareness and Sensitivity' held at the Embassy on 15 July 2016.

The APCD presented useful information on disability-related issues, including accessibility principles and standards and tips on interacting with persons with disabilities.

The Volleyball Donation Appreciation Ceremony was held on 25 July 2016 at the APCD Training Building to acknowledge and give thanks to the volleyballs donated by key partners Japan Volleyball Association, Sports for Tomorrow Consortium and JICA. The volleyballs will be used by APCD training participants as part of sports, leisure and recreation activities in the future.

Overseas Study Tour for Secondary School Teachers in Collaboration with JICA, Bangkok, Thailand, 26 July 2016

Fifteen secondary school teachers from Japan and JICA representatives visited the APCD on 26 July 2016 to increase their understanding about the importance of international cooperation, relationship between Japan and Thailand, and development issues in Thailand.

Guests were also able to broaden their experience and knowledge about disability in the Asia-Pacific region through a lively exchange session with TCTP 2016 participants with intellectual disabilities, as well as a tour of 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe and other accessible facilities of the APCD buildings.

OZ no kai representatives touring the 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe

The APCD welcomed representatives of OZ no kai, a Thailand-based self-help group composed of children with disabilities and their parents from Japan. The aim of the visit was to learn activities related to disability and development of APCD from the perspective of emerging disability groups, as well as to provide visitors with opportunities to learn accessible working environment for persons with disabilities through the 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe.

Philippine Embassy officials and staff at the 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe

Philippine Embassy-Bangkok officials and staff visited the APCD on 22 July 2016 to observe the 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe and exchange information with the staff and trainees. The visit was part of the Embassy's celebration of the 38th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week from 17 to 23 July 2016. The guests were also given a tour of the accessible facilities of the APCD buildings .
