Workshop on Economic Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities & Post Disaster in Nepal, Kathmandu, Nepal, 9 June 2016

In collaboration with the Government of Nepal through the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare, the National Association of the Physical-Disabled Nepal (NAPD-Nepal), the National Rehabilitation Centre of the Disabled Nepal (NRCD Nepal), the National Association of Hard of Hearing and Deafened Nepal (SHRUTI-Nepal) and the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD), a one-day workshop on "Economic Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities & Post Disaster in Nepal" was held on 9 June 2016 in Kathmandu, Nepal. The workshop was also supported by Workability International Japan (WIJ) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Nepal. The event was graced by H.E. C.P. Mainali, Deputy Prime Minister/Minister of Women, Children and Social Welfare of Nepal who delivered the opening remarks.

The workshop, attended by more than 30 participants with various disabilities, was organized to empower persons with disabilities and build their capacity in post-disaster coordination with stakeholders based on community-based inclusive development approach.

Handover of the accessible van by Nissan Motor (Thailand), Co., Ltd. to APCD 

The APCD extended its deep appreciation to Nissan Motor (Thailand) Co., Ltd. in a special ceremony on 16 June 2016 for its donation of a fully accessible van that will be used to facilitate activities related to APCD, particularly the 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe. Present at the handover ceremony was APCD Executive Board Chairman Dr. Tej Bunnag and Nissan Motor (Thailand) Co., Ltd. President Mr. Kazutaka Nambu.

Dr. Bunnag lauded Nissan for sharing APCD's commitment to promote the empowerment of persons with disabilities and for paving the way for an inclusive, rights-based and barrier-free society for all. The 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe was set up to commemorate the 60th birth anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in 2015. Implemented by the APCD and Thai Yamazaki in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand, with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, the Government of Japan, JICA, and Thai Beverage Co. Ltd., the Bakery provides training opportunities for Thai persons with disabilities.

2nd AICHR Regional Dialogue on the Mainstreaming of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the ASEAN Community, Chiang Mai, Thailand, 29 June -           1 July 2016


Opening of the AICHR regional meeting 

As a follow-up to the first event last year, the 2nd ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) Regional Dialogue on the Mainstreaming of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the ASEAN Community was held from 29 June to 1 July 2016 in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The event was organized by AICHR in collaboration with APCD and in partnership with the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF), USAID and UNICEF.

Attended by over 150 participants, the Dialogue focused on issues such as health, education and employment policies of persons with disabilities in the ASEAN region. Its aim was to bring related ASEAN sectoral bodies together to set strategic direction and focus on ASEAN's collective efforts to reduce the barriers for persons with disabilities.

The Deputy Director of the Country Assistance Planning Division I of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Ms. Maki Kawamura, visited the APCD on 14 June 2016 to exchange information about the technical collaboration among the Government of Japan through JICA, the Government of Japan through the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and APCD.

Ms. Kawamura was also given a tour of APCD's accessible and inclusive working environment, particularly the 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe where she interacted with trainees of the Skills Development Training for Thai Persons with Disabilities.

20th Art for All Camp Volunteer Training, Bangkok, Thailand, 25 June 2016

The APCD conducted the 20th Art for All Camp Volunteer Training at the APCD Training Building on 25 June 2016 with 110 participants attending. The activity was held in collaboration with the Art for All Foundation of Thailand.

"Art for All" is an innovative program that aims to develop youths with and without
disabilities to 'step over the limit' and get advise from experts in various fields. Apart
from being given a brief presentation about APCD's regional activities, the participants were also given time to reflect on persons with disabilities via group work and ice-breaking activities.
