A gathering among ASEAN senior officials, APCD and other partners 

The Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) met with officials of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat from 24 to 26 April 2016 to exchange information and updates of its activities, including the APCD/JAIF Project in the Mekong region and strengthen their partnership in terms of pushing forward the empowerment of persons with disabilities in the region. The meeting was also held to discuss future collaboration for projects in the ASEAN region, including autism-related activities and events.

The APCD and Thai Yamazaki Co., Ltd. conducted an Orientation of Thai Persons with Disabilities for its 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe Project 2016 from 25 to 29 April 2016 in Bangkok, Thailand. The Project is implemented by APCD and Thai Yamazaki in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS) of Thailand with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, the Government of Japan, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Thai Beverage Co., Ltd.

The 12 trainees will undergo an on-the-job training at the 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe, a part of the 60 Plus+ Project's series of activities commemorating Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn's 60th birth anniversary in 2015. The Project aims to empower persons with disabilities and promote a barrier-free, inclusive and rights-based society for all.

1st Vietnam Autism Awareness Day, Hanoi, Vietnam, 1-2 April 2016

Friendship Games 

In commemoration of the 1st Vietnam Autism Awareness Day, the Vietnam Autism Friendship Games was held successfully in Hanoi, Vietnam from 1 to 2 April 2016. The events were organized by the Vietnam Autism Network (VAN), the APCD and the Government of Vietnam through the Ministry of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs, in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat, the Vietnam Federation on Disability (VFD), JICA and the ASEAN Autism Network (AAN).

The event was graced by the Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community, H.E. Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee. The first ever Vietnam Autism Friendship Games was attended by around 2,000 persons with autism, their families and supporters, with different recreation, leisure and sports activities.

Tour of the 60 Plus+ Bakery and Cafe 

The new Chief Representative of the JICA Thailand Office, Mr. Hiroo Tanaka, visited APCD on 27 April 2016 to further strengthen ties between Japan and Thailand through APCD's collaboration. During the visit, he was given a tour of APCD's accessibile facilities and the 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe, as well as interacted with the trainees of APCD's Skills Development for Thai Persons with Disabilities 2016. The visit was also to introduce the new Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteer (JOCV) to APCD, Ms. Ruriko Tsune.

World Autism Awareness Day 2016 Symposium, Tokyo, Japan, 9 April 2016

Presentation about APCD's autism-related regional activities 

The World Autism Awareness Day 2016 Symposium was held on 9 April 2016 in Tokyo, Japan with over 400 participants attending. The symposium was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan through the Office of Support for Children with Disabilities and Persons with Developmental Disorders and the Autism Society of Japan along with other relevant ministries and organizations. The APCD shared its expertise on autism-related regional activities and projects in the Asia-Pacific region.

National Consultation Workshop for the Development of Lao PDR's Draft on National Disability Policy, Vientiane, Lao PDR, 31 March-1 April 2016

The National Committee for Disabled and Elderly People (NCDE), with support from Handicap International and in collaboration with APCD and other stakeholders, organized the Workshop for the Development of Lao PDR's Draft on National Disability Policy in Vientiane on 31 March 2016. The APCD provided inputs for the development of the Policy, including the inclusion of emerging groups of persons with disabilities such as persons with autism, persons with intellectual disability, persons with psychosocial disability, persons who are hard of hearing, among others.

Apart from the workshop proper, the APCD also shared its publications and information about its recent activities and projects with the JICA representatives and conducted accessibility audits of Srikeud Market in Naxaithong District for its APCD/Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) Project.

The APCD hosted the study visit of students of the Social Policy & Development Programme, Faculty of Social Administration of Thammasat University on 8 April 2016.

The purpose of the visit was for the students to learn more about APCD's history and regional activities on disability and development, to interact with various types of persons with disabilities from the empowerment perspective and to observe APCD's accessible features based on the Universal Design concept.

The visit, held in cooperation with the Association of Parents for Thai Persons with Autism, aimed at introducing the visitors to APCD regional activities, touring APCD's accessible working environment and the 60 Plus+ Bakery & Cafe, and excplore future collaboration.
