Third Asia-Pacific CBR Congress, Tokyo, Japan, 1-3 September 2015

The Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD), serving as Secretariat of the Community-Based Rehabilitation Asia-Pacific (CBR AP) Network, took part in the 3rd Asia-Pacific CBR Congress held in Tokyo, Japan 1-3 September 2015. The Congress was organized by the CBR AP Network, the Japan NGO Network on Disabilities (JANNET) and the Japanese Society for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities (JSRPD), in collaboration with the World Health Organization, the APCD, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japan Disability Forum, The Nippon Foundation, and other partners.
With the theme of 'Poverty Reduction through Community-based Inclusive Development and Sustainable Development Goals', the Congress was attended by over 500 participants, including Disabled People's Organizations (DPOs) representatives, parents organizations, local and international non-government organizations, government officials and other stakeholders. One of the highlights of the Congress was the attendance of Their Imperial Highnesses Prince and Princess Hitachi, Royal Patrons of JSRPD. Other important events that happened during the Congress were the election of new Executive Committee members, the launch of the report on 'Good Practices on Community-based Inclusive Development in Asia and the Pacific', and the announcement of the next Asia-Pacific CBR Congress venue to be held in Mongolia in 2019.

Signing Ceremony of Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project, Bangkok, Thailand, 25 September 2015
Signing of Project partners
The Signing Ceremony of the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects was successfully conducted in Bangkok, Thailand on 25 September 2015. The Government of Japan, through the Embassy of Japan in Thailand, agreed to support the Project on Supporting Employment Transition for Persons with Disabilities. It is one of the projects lined up by APCD to commemorate the 60th birth anniversary of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn this year.
The Project seeks to empower and further promote Thai persons with disabilities with the construction of a human resource development branch at APCD and enhance the mobility for persons with disabilites being engaged in grassroots activities in Thailand. The Project is conducted in partnership with the Government of Japan through the Embassy of Japan in Thailand, Japan Official Development Assistance and Thai Yamazaki.

Collaboration with the Government of Lao PDR for the National Day of Persons with Disabilities, Vientiane, Lao PDR, 26 September 2015

The National Day of Persons with Disabilities, organized by the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, Lao Disabled People's Association and Handicap International - Laos with support from APCD, JICA and Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF), was celebrated in Vientiane, Lao PDR on 26 September 2015.
The event was held to increase awareness for all stakeholders to understand disability and encourage people to adopt and reduce the gap between persons with and without disabilities. Among the activities conducted on this day were an early morning 'Walk for Health', an exhibition and a sports event participated by persons with and without disabilities, children and the elderly.

APCD/JAIF Project Training on Livelihood Project Management and Rural Market Modification, Naxaithong District, Lao PDR, 24-26 September 2015
Coaching on how to sell products effectively in the rural market
The APCD/JAIF Project conducted a Training on Livelihood Project Management for persons with disabilities on 24 to 26 September 2015 in Naxaithong District, Lao PDR.
The Project team also conducted monitoring and accessibility audits of existing rural market modifications in the district. With the help of Steering Committee members and local partners, the team interviewed and surveyed market owners, market managers, sellers and buyers to determine whether or not the rural market modifications had a positive impact on their lives. Market sellers were also given coaching on how to effectively sell their products in the market.

CIAI/APCD Project Capacity Building of Local Service Providers in Sisaket and Phayao, Thailand, 9-12 & 16-19 September 2015

The CIAI (Italian Association for Aid to Children)/APCD 'Community for All' Project conducted a series of training on Capacity Building of Local Service Providers in Sisaket and Phayao provinces from 9 to 12 September 2015 and 16 to 19 September 2015, respectively.
Local service providers who participated in the training included representatives from educational institutions, hospitals and public health organizations. The training was aimed at evaluating the knowledge about accessibility and other needs of persons with disabilites. The Project team assisted local service providers and DPOs reach mutual agreement on how best to sustain disability-related activities. They also conducted informal visits to service provider facilities, hospitals, and local government offices to do accessibility checks.

Knowledge Co-Creation Program in Independent Living and Mainstreaming for Persons with Disabilities in Africa, Bangkok, Thailand, 8 September 2015

The APCD, in collaboration with JICA and the Disabled People's International Asia Pacific, hosted 22 visitors from DPIs in Africa for the 'Knowledge Co-Creation Program in Independent Living and Mainstreaming for Persons with Disabilities in Africa' at the APCD Training Building on 8 September 2015.
The delegates from Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa and Zimbabwe were given a presentation of APCD's history and regional activities on disability and development. They also toured APCD premises to observe its fully accessible facilities in accordance with Universal Design elements that benefit persons with and without disabilities and the elderly.

International Week of the Deaf 2015, Bangkok, Thailand, 27 September 2015
Organizers and partners at the Opening Ceremony of this first ever historical event in Thailand
The International Week of the Deaf 2015 was organized at the Siam Park City in Bangkok, Thailand by the Deaf Association of Bangkok in collaboration with APCD, SOMPO Japan Foundation, JICA and other partners on 27 September 2015. This year's theme was "With Sign Language Rights, Our Children Can!'.
The historic, first-of-its-kind event in Thailand was attended by around 600 participants, including persons who are deaf and hard of hearing. Apart from the formal opening ceremony, other activities included a ceremonial T-Shirt giving and group photos, as well as an exhibition, all of which were aimed at promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The International Week of the Deaf has been celebrated annually since 1959 by the global deaf community.

Good Practices on Community-based Inclusive Development in Asia and the Pacific
The 'Good Practices on Community-based Inclusive Development in Asia and the Pacific' report is now available for download, including accessible formats, at the APCD website. Launched at the Third Asia-Pacific CBR Congress held in Tokyo, Japan, from 1 to 3 September 2015, the report documents initiatives in countries in the Asia-Pacific region (Cambodia, China, Japan, India, Nepal, Pacific Islands, Philippines and Tajikistan) that reflect the achievements of Community-based Rehabilitation and Community-based Inclusive Development.
