8th World Autism Awareness Day and 2nd Cambodian Autism Awareness Day, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 2 April 2015

The Government of Cambodia through the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation (MoSVY) and the Disability Action Council (DAC) led the celebration of the 8th World Autism Awareness Day and 2nd Cambodian Autism Awareness Day on 2 April 2015 in Phnom Penh. Also present to lend their support to the event were the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) and the ASEAN Autism Network (AAN).
Attended by over 550 participants, the event brought together different local and international stakeholders on intellectual disability and autism, which further strengthened collaboration and networking, and renewed the commitment of concerned parties on the issue.

National Workshop for the Establishment of CIDAN, Phnom Penh, Cambodia,

The National Workshop for the Establishment of the Cambodian Intellectual Disability and Autism Network (CIDAN) was attended by over 150 participants, including persons with intellectual disabilities and autism, their families, and stakeholders, from 31 March to 1 April 2015 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The Workshop was organized by MoSVY, DAC and APCD, in collaboration with JICA, JAIF, and NGOs related to intellectual disability and autism in Cambodia.
Aimed at giving opportunities for persons with intellectual disabilities and autism to network and strengthen their collaboration with partners on the national level, the event was the venue for the establishment of CIDAN, the election of the CIDAN Executive Committee, and the drafting of the Phnom Penh Recommendations on Intellectual Disability and Autism, which was presented at the 8th World Autism Awareness Day and 2nd Cambodian Autism Awareness Day celebrations in Phnom Penh on 2 April 2015.

Third Country Training Program 2014 Follow-Up/2015 Preparation, Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 31 March-2 April 2015
Special needs assessment at the TCTP preparatory activities
In collaboration with the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA) and JICA, with support from the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security of Thailand, APCD conducted follow-up activities of the Third Country Training Program (TCTP) 2014 and needs assessments of TCTP 2015 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia from 31 March to 2 April 2015. The "TCTP: Knowledge Creation Forum on Community-based Inclusive Development" is aimed at empowering young persons with intellectual disabilities, autism and hard of hearing in Southeast Asian countries.
Interviews were held with 15 persons with autism and intellectual disabilities, five persons who are hard of hearing, and 25 parents and family members and supporters of persons with autism and intellectual disabilities. Feedback about TCTP 2014 was generally positive, especially when it came to the friendly methodology and activities for participants. Interviewees also shared their ideas and suggestions about the activities related to TCTP 2015.

APCD/JAIF Project's Monitoring and Midterm Evaluation, Kien Svay District, Cambodia, 2-4 April 2015

The APCD/JAIF Project was in Kien Svay District in Cambodia's Kandal Province from 2 to 4 April 2015 to monitor and conduct a midterm evaluation, as well as document good practices, of its rural market modifications.
The Project Team was present at the official launch of Sdao Kanleng Market's accessible features with local and national government representatives, including the DAC, the media, and other stakeholders present. Kien Svay District officials thanked the Project for providing them with much-needed support and expressed a desire for further collaboration with APCD and JAIF.

APCD/JAIF Project's Monitoring and Midterm Evaluation, Ba Vi District, Vietnam, 6-8 April 2015
Monitoring accessible toilet in Dream Market, BaVi District in Vietnam
In collaboration with the Government of Vietnam through the Ministry of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs, the APCD/JAIF Project conducted monitoring activities and a midterm evaluation of four modified rural markets in Ba Vi District, Vietnam from 6 to 8 April 2015. The markets are Tay Dang, Doc Tan Hong, Dream (Mo), and Nhong.
The Project Team also identified a new market for modification, the Thuan My Market, and signed a memorandum of agreement wth Ba Vi District and the commune official in charge of the market. Interviews were also conducted to identify and document good practices in the four modified markets.

Orientation for Skills Development Training for the Empowerment of Thai Persons with Disabilities, Bangkok, Thailand, 22-30 April 2015

Thai Yamazaki Co. Ltd. and APCD, in collaboration with JICA and the Royal Government of Thailand, conducted an Orientation for Skills Development Training for the Empowerment of Thai Persons with Disabilities for 15 young participants at the APCD Training Building, Bangkok, Thailand, from 22 to 30 April 2015. The orientation is a part of the Thai Yamazaki/APCD Project, a joint initiative to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
The Orientation seeks to give opportunities for Thai persons with disabilities to develop communication and facilitation skills that will enable them to work in a barrier-free working environment. In particular, the participants learned about Disability Equality Training, different types of disability, the promotion of an inclusive, barrier-free society, and strategic approaches in mainstreaming disability into business.

Fifteen representatives of the newly-established CIDAN visited the APCD on 24 April 2015 to exchange information about intellectual disability and autism issues in the Asia-Pacific region.
Apart from the opportunity to gain more understanding about APCD's pivotal role in the region, the visitors also gave a presentation to APCD staff on CIDAN's mission and vision, and were given a tour of APCD's accessible facilities.
