The Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) participated in the Second Session of the Working Group on the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022 in New Delhi, India from 1 to 4 March 2015. The Session was organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in cooperation with the Government of India through the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Around 50 Working Group members gathered to monitor the achievements and progress made in the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022. Non-Handicapping Environment activities, including accessibility audits, by APCD's former training participants were also conducted in New Delhi.

APCD/JAIF Project Training on Disability Awareness/Advocacy, Pyapon Township, Myanmar, 10-13 March 2015

The APCD/Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) Project conducted several activities in Pyapon Township, Myanmar from 10 to 13 March 2015, including the Training on Disability Awareness/Advocacy, Project monitoring and midterm evaluation and documentation on good practices for rural market modification.

The Training, attended by the Project's Steering Committee members with support from the Pyapon Township's Department of Social Welfare staff, helped members plan for awareness-raising activities for the launch of the accessible features of Myauk Pine Market. Other activities included discussions with market administrators and owners of new target markets for modification, the signing of memorandum of understanding with a new target market, and interviews with partners and stakeholders for the Project's good practices documentation.

APCD held a series of meetings with project partners and stakeholders in Tokyo, Japan from 9 to 14 March 2015, to plan for future collaborations, including preparations for the 3rd Asia-Pacific Community-based Rehabilitation (CBR) Congress, and to conduct field visits and meetings with Disabled People's Organizations (DPOs) and the business sector.

Project partners and supporters of various APCD activities include the Royal Thai Embassy in Tokyo; Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) of Japan; Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA); Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan; The Nippon Foundation (TNF); Autism Society Japan (ASJ); and Yamazaki Baking Co., Ltd.

Introductory Training on CBID for Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers
in Bangladesh, Bangkok, Thailand, 19-20 March 2015

APCD conducted an Introductory Training on Community-based Inclusive Development (CBID) for two staff of the Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers (JOCV) based in Bangladesh. The Training was held at the APCD Training Building from 19 to 20 March 2015.

The highlight of the Training was a workshop on Disability Equality Training (DET), which aimed at developing the volunteers' understanding of disability based on the Social Model of Disability. It also enabled the trainees to identify which areas within their organization and community could be changed to promote more participation of persons with disabilities. Complementing the DET workshop are presentations by APCD staff of accessibility principles and standards and examples of CBID practice in communities being implemented by the APCD/JAIF Project.

Training on Job Coach Basic Course, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 2-6 March 2015

One of APCD's staff took part in the Training on Job Coach Basic Course in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 2 to 6 March 2015. The Training was organized by Job Coach Network Malaysia and sponsored by JICA Malaysia.

The five-day Training was attended by 35 participants representing government, non-government organizations and businesses, who all took part in intensive lectures and practical workshop sessions to enhance their basic concept of Supported Employment for persons with disabilities. The highlight of the Training is that participants were able to know the benefits and services for both persons with disabilities and employers.

The trial of the Captioning Service in the Philippines commenced at a  teleconference for the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction for Disaster Prevention Regarding People with Special Needs held in Sendai, Japan from 14 to 18 March 2015. The Project, conducted in partnership with APCD and ASTEM Japan, with the support of the City Government of Makati through the Makati Social Welfare Department (MSWD) and Japan Disability Forum (JDF).

The teleconference held on 16 March 2015 was attended by speakers from the City Government of Makati and the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA). The Online Captioning Project team, with support from professional captioners, was able to get first-hand experience in real-time captioning.
