APCD/JAIF Project's Monitoring and Midterm Evaluation, Naxaithong, Lao PDR, 23-25 February 2015

In collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, the APCD/JAIF Project conducted monitoring activities and midterm evaluation of modifications done in four rural markets in Naxaithong District, Lao PDR from 23 to 25 February 2015. Modifications include the construction of ramps and accessible toilets in four markets -- New Naxaithong, Chong Phoey, Nakhounnoy, and Nong Sa. Two more markets -- Ilay and Houa Khoua -- were pinpointed for modifications in the coming weeks.
The Project also did documentation work on good practices for rural market modification and conducted interviews with key stakeholders, including persons with disabilities.

Collaboration with ASEAN, Jakarta, Indonesia, 11-14 February 2015

APCD met with top officials of the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Secretariat and the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Government of Indonesia, Mission of Thailand and Japan to ASEAN Secretariat from 12 to 13 February 2015 in Jakarta, Indonesia to develop a closer collaboration among partners. The Meeting aimed at strengthening the partnership among partners, as well as, exchanging and sharing information and updates about APCD's activities, including JAIF Project, in the sub-region.

JICA Research on Disability and Sports, Bangkok, Thailand, 9-17 February 2015

JICA, in collaboration with APCD, conducted follow-up interviews with 11 physical education teachers of sports players with disabilities in several schools in Bangkok from 9 to 17 February 2015. The Research on Disability and Education: Disability and Sports aims to determine the impact of sports for persons with disabilities, to promote the empowerment of persons with disabilities and protect the rights of persons with disabilities to participate in a barrier-free society. The first part of the Research was conducted on 5 to 11 September 2014 where sports players with disabilities in Thailand were interviewed.
Snowball sampling approach was applied to ensure that disability, type of sport, gender and age are taken into consideration.

Dao Ruang's Stakeholder Meeting, Bangkok, Thailand, 14 February 2015

Dao Ruang members, consisting of eight self-advocates and three family members, met with APCD representatives on 14 February 2015 at the APCD Training Building, Bangkok, Thailand. The Meeting's highlight is a brainstorming session on how to make Dao Ruang sustainable and give members a deeper understanding on the real meaning of self-advocacy in the context of intellectual disability.
Aimed at developing members' self-confidence and empowering them, the Meeting also featured a Do-It-Yourself Empowerment activity where participants were asked to design their own Valentine's Day cards, and a group discussion among intellectual disability stakeholders on how to make the Dao Ruang Group sustainable.

Grant Presentation Ceremony and Appreciation to Sompo Japan Foundation for Support Project, Bangkok, Thailand, 17 February 2015

Sompo Japan Foundation was acknowledged for its generous support to a research study about the needs of Thais with hearing disabilities in a Grant Presentation Ceremony and Appreciation on 17 February 2015 in Bangkok, Thailand. The event was held in collaboration with the Deaf Association of Bangkok (DA.BKK), the APCD, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The purpose of the research is to determine the experience of persons with hearing disabilities when they seek treatment in government hospitals in Thailand. It also aims to enhance the quality of the relationship between health workers and persons with hearing disabilities.

Fourth Regional Training of Trainers of Disability Equality Training 2015, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 25 January-6 February 2015

Two APCD staff took part in the Fourth Regional Training of Trainers of Disability Equality Training (DET) 2015 at the Institute of Training, National Council of Welfare and Social Development in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 25 January to 6 February 2015.
Attended by 19 participants from the Asia-Pacific region, the two-week Training aimed at equipping trainers with disabilities with facilitation skills and gain a deeper understanding of the social model of disability in DET. It also meant to strengthen the network of DET trainers in the region.
