Training on Captioning, Makati City, Philippines, 5-8 January 2015

Training persons with disabilities in professional captioning skills

With the support of the City Government of Makati, the Makati Social Welfare and Development (MSWD) in partnership with APCD and ASTEM Japan, conducted a four-day intensive Training on Captioning in Makati City, Philippines from 5 to 8 January 2015. Of the 10 persons with disabilities who took part in the Training, five were selected.

Aimed at developing real-time captioning skills of persons with disabilities and providing them with a viable source of income in the long-term, this initiative will be providing real-time, online captioning services in various opportunities in the future.

CIAI-APCD "Community for All" Workshop for Community Planning, Sisaket, Thailand, 20-23 January 2015

The "Community for All" Project of CIAI (Italian Association for Aid to Children)-APCD continues in Sisaket, Thailand with the Workshop for Community Planning for Pakmai, Ku and Kantalak Sub-district Administrative Organizations (SAOs) from 20 to 23 January 2015.

Apart from introducing Community-based Inclusive Development (CBID) concepts to over 20 participants, which included persons with disabilities and the elderly, the Workshop also aimed to establish a CBID Committee using the Participatory Planning Approach. Together, the participants discussed action plans for the newly-formed CBID Committee, as well as defined Committee structures, roles and responsibilities.

Japan-East Asia Network Exchange for Students and Youths, Bangkok, Thailand, 19 January 2015

Forty-six high school students from Japan and four teachers took part in the Japan-East Asia Network Exchange for Students and Youths (JENESYS2.0) held at the APCD Training Building on 19 January 2015. JENESYS2.0 is a project of the Official Development Assistance (ODA), an arm of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs-Government of Japan.

In collaboration with the APCD, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan International Cooperation Center (JICE), information about Japan's ODA for APCD was introduced to  the young participants. APCD's role in the empowerment of persons with disabilities in the Asia-Pacific region was also highlighted. It gave them an opportunity to develop a better understanding about persons with disabilities through presentations and group exercises, including disability-inclusive sports activities and the development of verbal skills to communicate with persons with visual disabilities.

Visit by Disabled Peoples' International Asia-Pacific Region, Bangkok, Thailand, 22 January 2015

Discussing strategic planning skills in project implementation

Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD) welcomed representatives from the Disabled Peoples' International Asia-Pacific Region (DPI/AP) for a one-day orientation at the APCD Training Building on 22 January 2015. Among the guests were an Executive Committee Member of the Myanmar National Association of the Blind and the National Project Coordinator of DPI/AP in Thailand.

Apart from learning more about the disability movement in Thailand, the visitors also briefed on strategic planning skills, as well as exchanged information about project implementation among communities in Myanmar and Thailand. Moreover, the visitors were given an overview of APCD's vision and its crucial role in the regional disability development program.

Follow-up with Hard of Hearing and Autism Groups, Manila, Philippines, 4 January 2015

In a follow-up to the Third Country Training Programme (TCTP): Knowledge Creation Forum on Community-based Inclusive Development 2014 (Capacity-building of Persons who are Hard of Hearing), APCD met with members of the Hard of Hearing (HoH) Support Group Philippines who took part in the Training to discuss future plans and activities in both local and national levels on 4 January 2015 in Makati City, Philippines. APCD also met with representatives of the Autism Society Philippines to discuss preparations for their activities in the future. The series of meetings were held with the support of the Government of the Philippines.

On 24 August to 6 September 2014, the TCTP Training was held by APCD in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)-Government of Japan, the Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs-Government of Thailand, and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security-Government of Thailand. It targeted young leaders who are hard of hearing. After the Training, participants from the Philippines formed HoH Support Group Philippines, which is now an official member of the Asia Pacific Federation of Hard of Hearing and Deafened.
