Mainstreaming Women with Disabilities in the Beijing+20 Review Side Event, Bangkok, Thailand, 17 November 2014

The South Asian Disability Forum (SADF), in cooperation with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD), the British Council (BC), the Comprehensive Health and Education Forum (CHEF) International, the Asia Pacific Women with Disabilities United (APWWDU), and the Korea Disabled People's Development Institute (KODDI) held the Mainstreaming Women with Disabilities in the Beijing+20 Review Side Event at the United Nations Convention Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, on 17 November 2014.

Aimed at highlighting a regional focus on the inclusion of women with disabilities, the Side Event provided an opportunity for women with disabilities in South Asia to take part in the discussion process of the Beijing+20 Review, to develop their capacity in engaging and collaborating with other stakeholders, and to encourage dialogues among various groups towards the promotion of human rights and justice for women with disabilities.

Held alongside the Asian and Pacific Conference on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment: Beijing+20 Review from 17-20 November 2014, the Side Event gave participants of the Regional Training on Empowerment of Women with Disabilities in South Asia a chance to share their experiences and insights about important issues faced by women with disabilities.

Regional Training on Empowerment of Women with Disabilities in South Asia, Bangkok, Thailand, 14-16 November 2014

Women with disabilities from Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka gathered at the APCD Training Building in Bangkok, Thailand for the Regional Training on Empowerment of Women with Disabilities in South Asia. Organized by SADF, APCD, BC and CHEF International, the Training was held from 14 to 16 November 2014, as an activity of the South Asian Disability and Development Initiative (SADDI) by the aforementioned partners.

The three-day Training enabled participants to share their knowledge and experiences, and exchange information about empowerment of women with disabilities from a South Asian perspective. Men with disabilities were also invited as resource speakers to share their views.

In 2015, relevant activities are planned in Afghanistan and Nepal.

APCD welcomed delegates from the Government of Japan through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by H.E. Mr. Kimihiro Ishikane, Director General of the International Cooperation Bureau, on 14 November 2014. Various views and experiences were exchanged in the meeting.

The visitors were also taken on a tour of APCD offices, including the APCD Training Building where they observed the Regional Training on Empowerment of Women with Disabilities in South Asia.

CIAI-APCD Community for All Project's "Training on CBID Methodology and Management," Kanchanaburi, Thailand, 13-14 November 2014

CIAI (Italian Association for Aid to Children) and APCD conducted the "Training on Community-based Inclusive Development (CBID) Methodology and Management" in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, on 13 to 14 November 2014, as part of the ongoing Community for All Project.

Attended by 50 participants from six Sub-district Administrative Organizations (SAOs), the Training was aimed at deepening prospective CBID Committee members' understanding of CBID principles and participatory community planning. It also laid the groundwork for the establishment of the CBID Committee in Kanchanaburi.

Apart from the Training proper, the CIAI-APCD Project Team also conducted accessibility audits in Muang and Thongphaphum municipalities and discussed future plans for the CBID Committee.

The National Community-based Rehabilitation (CBR) Convention was organized by the Government of Malaysia through the Department of Social Welfare, Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development on 12 to 13 November 2014 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

An APCD representative was invited as keynote speaker of the event, which was attended by around 500 participants. Many of APCD's ex-training participants also joined the event, organized to update and share the progress of the CBR network's activities.

Workshop on Non-Handicapping Environment, Khon Kaen, Thailand, 30 October 2014

The Wheelchair & Friendship Center of Asia (WAFCAT), in collaboration with APCD, held the Workshop on Non-Handicapping Environment in Khon Kaen, Thailand, on 30 October 2014.

Aimed at providing community-development skills to special education teachers in Khon Kaen, the Training introduced the basic principles of accessibility to participants and gave them an opportunity to use what they have learned via practical exercises.

To further enhance the participants' experience, the Workshop also included accessibility audits in selected areas, including office buildings, as well as visits to homes of children with disabilities.

Economic Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities through a Community-based Employment Support, Okinawa, Japan, 3 September-3 October 2014

APCD Public Relations Officer Mr. Chris Benjakul was one of the participants of the "Economic Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Through a Community-based Employment Support" training organized by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) held in Okinawa, Japan, from 3 September to 3 October 2014.

The one-month program, which brought together 14 participants from nine countries in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond, was designed to showcase case studies featuring employment support for persons with disabilities who are trained to live independently and actively participate in society through the creation of job opportunities. The program aims to strengthen links among related organizations from participating countries and encourage them to build support systems and employment promotion for persons with disabilities and the elderly using local resources and networks.

The Summary Report on Third Country Training Programme: Knowledge Creation Forum on Community-based Inclusive Development 2014 (Capacity-building of Persons who are Hard of Hearing) is now available for download in different accessible formats.

The Report is the outcome of the Capacity-building Training of Persons who are Hard of Hearing organized by APCD, in collaboration with the Japan International Development Cooperation Agency (JICA), Government of Japan, Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, Royal Thai Government, and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Royal Thai Government. The Training brought together leaders who are hard of hearing from Southeast Asia and gave them a venue to share their ideas and skills, develop understanding of CBID, and create simulated action plans for their respective communities.
