Informal Session of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) on the Working Group on the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities (2013-2022), Thailand, 23 April 2013

The "Informal Session of Civil Society Organizations on the Working Group on the Asian and Pacific Decade of Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022" was held on 23 April 2013 at the United Nations Convention Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. The Meeting was participated by representatives from 18 civil society organizations in the Asia-Pacific region. A Joint Statement of Civil Society Organizations to the Committee of the Whole II was made as an outcome of the Meeting.
The following 15 civil society organizations, which are ready to serve as full members of the Working Group, were presented to the Commission in the alphabet order.

Three sister civil society organizations, including the ASEAN Autism Network, the Christian Blind Mission and the Community-based Rehabilitation Asia-Pacific Network will participate in the Working Group as observers in the first half of the decade (2013-2017).
The Commission also reached consensus on sharing concerns on civil society organizations which are not members of the Working Group and working closely with government partners towards the effective implementation of the Incheon Strategy, which is the Asian and Pacific region’s pioneering contribution to the High-level Meeting on Disability and Development to be held in New York on 23 September this year.

The Second ASEAN Autism Network (AAN) Congress, Brunei, 27-29 April 2013

The second ASEAN Autism Network (AAN) Congress was organized in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam on 27-29 April 2013 with the theme “Toward Autism Friendly ASEAN Community,” stressing the importance of inclusiveness of persons with autism to promote an autistic-friendly ASEAN community.
The Congress was designed to give an opportunity for persons with autism and their families to collaborate towards achieving ASEAN standards with reference to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and other international and regional instruments related to autism. Prior to the Congress, the ASEAN Autism Youth Camp was held from the morning of 26 April to the morning of 27 April at a camping site which allowed individuals with autism from different nations to interact and get to know each other.
As a result of the Congress, the "Bandar Seri Begawan Recommendations on Autism" was adopted. APCD as the Secretariat of AAN will continue to support AAN to facilitate cooperation for an "Inclusive, Barrier-Free and Rights-Based Society for Persons with Autism".

Kick Off CIAI-APCD Project "Community for All"

Establishing a barrier-free community enhances the participation of persons with disabilities in community development activities. The Project has been initiated by the Centro Italiano Aiuti all'Infanzia (CIAI) and APCD with the aim to illustrate “model communities for all” in Thailand, in which all people are able to truly co-exist with happiness. Community-based Inclusive Development (CBID) is the methodology implemented in the Project to ensure that persons with disabilities are fully included in all aspects of community life and fully access all community facilities and services. The involvement of local authorities and representatives of civil society are vital. Six Sub-district Administrative Organizations in each province: Kanchanaburi Province, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Phayao, Province and Sisaket Province in Thailand are the target areas. The Project will be implemented for four years.
