Photo Gallery 18 #Page 4 * 1st Viet Nam Autism Awareness Day In the framework of the 1st Viet Nam Autism Awareness Day, the conference on "Autism in Viet Nam: Current Situation and Challenges" took place at Vietnam-Japan Human Resources Cooperation Center, Hanoi on 1 April 2016. The conference was attended by H.E. Mr. Nguyen Trong Dam (Deputy Minister, Ministry of Labour-Invalids and Social Affairs of Viet Nam), H.E. Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee (Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community), Ms. Dang Huynh Mai (Honorable Chairperson, Vietnam Autism Network), Mr. Akiie Ninomiya (Executive Director, APCD), and Mr. Chikahiro Masuda (Senior Representative, Japan International Cooperation Agency Viet Nam Office). Over 150 persons who are professionals, teachers, and researchers, representatives of organizations working in the autism field; reporters and parents of persons with autism attended the event. At the end of the conference, the Vietnam Autism Network – represented by Vietnam Autism Community – proposed the Viet Nam Recommendation as a call to action for the Viet Nam government and related ministries and departments to improve the current situation of persons with autism. 1st Viet Nam Autism Friendship Games One of the highlights of the 1st Viet Nam Autism Awareness Day was the 1st Viet Nam Autism Friendship Games on 2 April 2016 at the Hoang Mai Cultural and Sports Center, Hanoi, Viet Nam. This event drew more than 2,000 participants from all over Viet Nam. Special guests included H.E. Mr. Nguyen Trong Dam (Deputy Minister, Ministry of Labour-Invalids and Social Affairs of Viet Nam), H.E. Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee (Deputy Secretary General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community), Mr. Akiie Ninomiya (Executive Director, APCD), Ms. Le Kim Dung (Director General, Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Labour-Invalids and Social Affairs of Viet Nam). The event was the time that persons with autism had a chance to participate in various sports activities including track and field, walking on stilts, tug of war and other art activities. They took part in competitions like true athletes; they all received certifications and the winners were awarded medals in front of all the people present at the stadium. Through this event, persons with autism were given a voice to raise awareness about autism. #Page 5 * 1. Persons with autism, their parents and supporters in Viet Nam were provided with opportunities to participate in various autism-friendly activities in sports, leisure and recreation. 2. It was demonstrated that persons with autism are capable of actively participating in sports, leisure and recreation given the opportunity and appropriate support. 3. Positive relationships among persons with autism, parents and supporters across Viet Nam were developed. 4. The rights of persons with autism to participate in sports, leisure and recreation were realized as stipulated in Article 30 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. 5. Viet Nam Autism Awareness Day will become an annual event of the autism community. 6. The community will have better knowledge about autism. Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee (Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community) HA NOI, 4 April 2016 – In line with the World Autism Awareness Day on 2 April, the First Vietnam Autism Awareness Day (VAAD) was celebrated in Ha Noi on 1-2 April. On the first day, the conference called “Autism in Viet Nam: Current Situation and Challenges” was attended by more than 150 participants, including senior government officials as well as persons with autism and their family members, at the Vietnam-Japan Human Resources Cooperation Center (VJCC) in Ha Noi. #Page 7 Continued... With around 2,000 persons living with autism, their parents and other family members, teachers and supporters, the Vietnam Autism Friendship Games was held on the second day at the Cultural and Sports Center. On behalf of the ASEAN Secretariat, H.E. Mr. Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community, who witnessed the epoch-making event, expressed his appreciation to the organiser in taking up a leadership role in promoting awareness on autism which according to him links with the core value of ASEAN Community. According to the human rights principles, DSG Vongthep mentioned that “ASE-AN will intensify efforts to utilize sports-related activities like this in the next five years as a platform to engage persons with disabilities, including those with autism.” The organizers and participants responded to one another with their proactive views that VAAD must be one tangible approach to create autism-friendly environment. It was noted that it is a concrete effort towards making persons with autism visible members in the ASEAN Community which strives for the true meaning of togetherness. The event was organized by the Government of Vietnam through the Ministry of Labour– Invalids and Social Affairs, the Vietnam Autism Network and the Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability in collaboration with the ASEAN Secretariat, the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the Vietnam Federation on Disability, the ASEAN Autism Network and other partners.
