Preparatory Meeting for the 4th Asia-Pacific Community-based Inclusive Development (CBID) Congress, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, 26-28 July 2017

The Asia-Pacific Development Center on Disability (APCD), in collaboration with the Government of Mongolia, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) Asia-Pacific Network, and other partners including the World Health Organization (WHO), among others, conducted a three-day preparatory meeting on 26 to 28 July 2017 in Mongolia for the 4th Asia-Pacific CBID Congress set for 2019. 

Attended by over 50 participants from various sectors, including the government, non-governmental organizations, and disabled people's organizations, the meeting discussed the Congress theme on 'Sustainable Economic Growth Through CBID' and sub-theme of 'Promotion of Disability-Inclusive Business (DIB) to Reduce Poverty'. An associate organizers meeting was also held to discuss expected outcomes and other pertinent matters.

The 4th CBID Asia-Pacific Congress will be held in 2019 at Mongolia's capital city of Ulaanbaatar and is expected to draw hundreds of participants from the region and beyond. The 3rd CBID Congress was held in Tokyo, Japan in 2015.

The APCD held a series of preparatory meetings with partners in Da Nang, Vietnam on 4 to 7 July 2017 for the 'ASEAN Hometown Improvement Project Workshop' scheduled for 8 to 9 August 2017.

Consultation meetings for the Workshop were held with Mr. Tran Cong Nguyen (Da Nang City Government Office Vice Director) and Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong (Da Nang Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Social Protection Division Head). The APCD also had meetings with the officials of Bamboo Dana Ltd. for a proposed bamboo forest and factory visit by Japanese bamboo experts. The team also exchanged information with the Bamboo Dana Ltd. staff with visual disabilities, as well as with members of Da Nang-based disabled people's organizations.

Follow-up Meetings with Partners and Stakeholders in Lao PDR, Vientiane, Lao PDR, 26-28 July 2017

Follow-up interview and review of the drummers with intellectual disabilities, their parents and trainers who took part in the 'Disability-Inclusive Drum Performance in ASEAN and Japan' 

The APCD visited Lao PDR on 26-28 July 2017 to conduct follow-up meetings with partners and stakeholders for its several projects and activities. 

Follow-up meetings were held with drum performers with intellectual disability who took part in the 'Disability-Inclusive Drum Performance in ASEAN and Japan' on 2 to 3 June in Bangkok, Thailand. The pioneering musical extravaganza gathered drummers with diverse disabilities from 10 ASEAN Member States and Japan to perform traditional drum music to some 1,500 people during the two-day event. Among the topics discussed were follow-up activities of the drum performers and the future direction of the group.

Another meeting was held to speed up the application process for the Third Country Training Programme (TCTP) 2017 and identify participants with autism as Lao representatives. The APCD also talked with partners to identify potential good practices of Disability-Inclusive Business (DIB) in Lao PDR.

The APCD team met with officials and staff of the Government of Lao PDR through the National Committee for Disabled and Elderly People (NCDE), the Lao Disabled People's Association (LDPA), the Lao Disabled Women's Development Center (LDWDC), and the Employment Support Center for the Disabled, to name a few.

Follow-up Documentation of 'Disability-Inclusive Drum Performers in ASEAN and Japan' Drum Performers with Psychosocial Disability, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, 12-15 July 2017

The APCD conducted film documentation of Nakhon Ratchasima's Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital Long Drum Group on 12 to 15 July 2017 as a follow-up activity for the recently-concluded 'Disability-Inclusive Drum Performance in ASEAN and Japan' in Bangkok, Thailand.

Apart from interviews with Phrakhru Prachotsangkhakit Nakkasem (Abbot of Huai Phrom Temple) and Phrakhru Visuthsanawat Manub Thaengsungnoen (Head Monk at Klang Wang Nam Keaw Temple) who are project founder/group facilitator and group coordinator, respectively, the team also interviewed selected members with psychosocial disabilities of the said drum group. The documentation work aims to highlight the empowerment of persons with disabilities and how they can change through the power of music.

Knowledge Co-Creation Program (Group and Region Focus) in Independent Living and Mainstreaming for Persons with Disabilities in Africa, Bangkok, Thailand, 6 July 2017

Representatives of Disabled People's International from various countries in Africa through its Asia-Pacific Regional Council visited the APCD to learn more about disability-inclusive employment and business, as well as to learn more about APCD's regional activities. Around 15 delegates, along with translators and sign language interpreters exchanged information with the APCD staff regarding the latter's vision and its good practices in terms of DIB-related activities.

The visitors also visited the 60 Plus+ Bakery and Cafe and interacted with its staff and trainees with diverse disabilities, and also toured APCD Training Building's fully accessible facilities.

Meeting on Disability Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction, Bangkok, Thailand, 5 July 2017

APCD's Networking and Collaboration Chief giving insights about past activities related to disaster risk reduction

The APCD contributed its expertise in the 'Project on Disability and Disasters: Empowering People and Building Resilience in Thailand', a forum on disability-inclusive disaster risk reduction. The meeting, held on 5 July 2017 in Bangkok, Thailand, was organized by the University of Sydney in Australia in collaboration with Stockholm International Research Institute and KPC Consultant in Bangkok under the Global Resilience Partnership Fund.

The meeting was also aimed at reporting to partners on the implementation progress of several related projects and look at future steps, as well as strengthening networks with partner organizations, including APCD.

The APCD welcomed the visit of Rustic Bakery owner and founder Mr. Tetsuzou Yoshida from Japan to observe the DIB practices of the 60 Plus+ Bakery and Cafe. Mr. Yoshida tried his baking skills at the 60 Plus+ Bakery and Cafe kitchen and exchanged information with the bakery staff with diverse disabilities.
